A double oak leaf crest (kashiwa) is found in the center surrounded by pine needles and pine, bamboo, plum, crane, and tortoise motifs. The oak leaf crest was popular among warrior classes, especially those devoted to Shinto. The pine, bamboo, and plum blossom are known as East Asia’s “companions of the deep cold” for surviving through all the seasons, and the trio embody constancy, fidelity, and honor. The crane and tortoise both denote peace and longevity. - - Researched by Elisa Law, Spring 2013.
