The drawn lines (hiki-mono) or stripe (hikiryo) crest shown here was first used in military camps to identify a general and his troops and later was adopted by powerful clans as a family crest. The elegance and docility of the butterfly, seen flying above peonies, made it a favorite motif of battle hardened warriors during the feudal era. -- Researched by Elisa Law, Spring 2013.
