Wedding dresses such as this in either silk or velvet with gold or silver embroidery were very popular at the Ottoman court and among the wealthier classes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The embroidery on most of these garments is wound on a cardboard or cotton base and then applied to the garment. -- Label copy for Society in Stitches: Islamic Domestic Embroidery - 1800 - 1920, June 2, 1980.
