Peşkir (ceremonial napkin) were used as wrappings for presents and as dining linens. Extremely fine examples were often given as gifts and prizes. "Turkish towel" is the name by which these sheer natural linen or cotton cloths have been known historically. The embroidery is always two-faced, essential for textiles that are viewed from both sides. This requirement limits the type of stitches used. Common stitches are satin, double running, and alternating straight -- Label copy from University Collection '83, June 13 - July 17, 1983.
