In this photographic diptych, Dorothy Cross draws on feminist traditions to reclaim vaginal space as a site of power. Here, Cross deftly positioned a pile of earth between the splayed legs of a female figure in the landscape to evoke a volcanic form. Its stream of steam increases across the two photographs as if a visualization of orgasmic release. This site of eruption alludes to feminine sexual pleasure, while also coyly evoking functions of male anatomy as this “volcano” rises phallus-like between her legs.

Label copy for The Time. The Place. Contemporary Art from the Collection, November 4, 2017 to March 25, 2018.
