Collier Schorr is primarily a photographer but has worked across multiple mediums to explore androgyny, gender, and desire. This plaster of Paris coated cotton child’s dress with graffitied interior is an early work in Schorr’s career and is one of a group of similar pieces which were exhibited together in 1991 at 303 Gallery. While the artist used this medium in her early career, the subject matter of the work is consistent throughout Schorr’s work. The graffiti inside of the dress is repetitive and has a sing-song quality to it, with some of the text rhyming. Repetition of questions such as “Have you been a good girl?” give the piece a teasing and overbearing quality. Schorr described the pieces as being about “femininity looking one way and feeling another.”
