Castles. Seymour Haden used a variety of printmaking techniques to capture the many moods of the medieval castles he encountered throughout the British Isles. For Kilgaren Castle the suggestive quality of the sharper etched line is carried to an extreme, creating a light, airy vista. In The Keep the fuzzy blur of the drypoint line creates a rich effect for foliage as well as the craggy masonry of the distant Corfe Castle. Haden used mezzotint to compose the atmosphere of darkness and swirling mist of the Welsh coastline encompassing the legendary Harlech Castle. He filled in the details with both etching and drypoint. -- Label copy for The Landscapes of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, Reed Gallery, April 6, 1991 to September 6, 1991.
