Nautical Scenes. Erith Marshes demonstrates Haden's move into a bolder style where the openness of line creates a new power of expression. The Breaking Up of the Agamemnon, Haden's most successful plate, blends this openness of line with an excellent sense of harmony and strength to portray the demolition of the 91-gun ship. The image was originally intended for publication in the art magazine Portfolio, with the proceeds going to the Hospital for the Incurables, but due to its large size, the smaller Brig at Anchor was substituted. -- Label copy for The Landscapes of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, Reed Gallery, April 6, 1991 to September 6, 1991.
