Flower Garden, the title of this photograph by Victor Landweber, would more likely suggest a traditional landscape than the sterile grid of paint chips that confronts us. Landweber essentially simplifies a landscape to just one of its most basic components, the colors that compose it. In this way, he has “equated landscape with mindscape,” compiling a collection of colors and words that evoke a landscape in the mind of the viewer rather than explicitly depicting it. He thus creates a photograph in which meaning is developed subjectively, in collaboration with the viewer, pointing out a flaw in the assumption that photographs, in general, have inherent, objective meaning. -- Label copy for Material and Document: Experiments in Photography during the 1970s, November 4, 2011, to February 4, 2012.
