Cindy Sherman's art is one of the defining forces of the 1980s. Her photographs question various media archetypes and attempt to show how immediately recognizable, widely shared and obvious these archetypes are. Using herself as the model, dressed in all manner of costume and surrounded by concocted sets, Sherman combines parody and satire with social commentary. Sherman's series Untitled Film Stills -- of which this is one-- taps another reservoir of imagery with unexpected power and subtlety. Using black and white film, she portrays a range of feminine myths, stereotypes and media images, chameleon-like in each role. She focuses exclusively on women, on the roles they play in the media, and on the nature of those roles as cultural cliches. -- Label copy for After Art: Rethinking 150 years of Photography, December 4, 1994 to March 26, 1995.
