Inspired by the extreme performances of Viennese Actionists like Rudolph Schwarzkogler, Rainer created self-portraits characterized by tortured body language and facial expressions. His “Face Farce” series communicates intense psychological states. This photograph captures the artist in strangely transformative moments that would otherwise be transitory and less open to scrutiny. The four quadrants of this image recall the pictures produced by an automated photo booth; in fact the artist started this series after encountering a booth in a Viennese train station. -- Label copy for Vortexhibition Polyphonica: Opus I, October 3, 2009, to February 9, 2010.
