In 1867, O'Sullivan was hired as official photographer for a government-funded survey, the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, to document the efforts of the historic effort to map the West before advancing settlers forever change it. Among his many other accomplishments, O'Sullivan was the first photographer to document the Grand Canyon from below as part of Wheeler's 1871 expedition that navigated up the Colorado River. His landscape photographs such as Canon de Chelly, depict remote places few whites had yet seen, and also display his austere style and perfect sense of composition. -- Label copy for After Art: Rethinking 150 Years of Photography, December 4, 1994 to March 26, 1995.
