Born in Japan, Hiroshi Sugimoto currently works in the United States. His work explores the concept of extended attention and is primarily in black and white. He has photographed seascapes, wildlife dioramas and movie theater interiors. In his theater series, from which U.A. Playhouse, New York is one example, Sugimoto exposed his film for the entire length of the movie, resulting in the screen appearing to emit an eerie white light which subtly illuminates the theater. -- Label copy for After Art: Rethinking 150 Years of Photography, December 4, 1994 to March 26, 1995.

During the 1970s, Hiroshi Sugimoto made single exposures of empty movie theaters that lasted as long as the feature films being projected. Over that time, the projected light accumulating on photographic film subtly illuminated the details of the dark theaters and bleached the screens white. -- Label copy for The Digital Eye: Photographic Art in the Electronic Age, July 9 to September 25, 2011.
