Sigmar Polke is primarily known as a painter, but since the 1960s he has also produced an extraordinary body of photographic works. In 1988 he produced a series of resin paintings and unfixed photographs, whose materials are constantly changing. It is thought that the artist, who delights in visual games was reacting to the writings of philosophers Walter Benjamin and Jean Baudrillard who focused on the reproducible quality of the photographic image, denying its original form. By creating a changing object (this photograph is not entirely chemically fixed to keep its image), Polke has made each experience of viewing it unique. -- Label copy for After Art: Rethinking 150 Years of Photography, December 4, 1994 to March 26, 1995.
