Mikolaj Smoczynski lives in Poland, where he is recognized for site-specific installations that expose the multitude of layers contained in walls and floors, and for his black-and-white photographs of dirt and water that resemble abstract paintings. Initially a painter, Smoczynski was influenced by the work of American abstract painters of the 1960s, and particularly by that of Franz Kline. --Label copy for After Art: Rethinking 150 Years of Photography, December 4, 1994 to March 26, 1995.
