In this photographic work, Los Angeles-based artist Uta Barth has created a serial experience of viewing that evokes movement and the passage of time. Across these multiple frames, the Vermont landscape in Barth’s photographs becomes increasingly rainy and humid, creating subtle shifts in the quality of light and the clarity of the images. Here, as in much of her work, Barth denies the viewer an obvious focal point. Instead she presents changing atmospheric conditions that take on the character of something seen in peripheral vision, making her subject the act of perception itself. Barth accentuates the effect by interrupting the sequence with an open expanse of gallery wall and inviting viewers to consider their own position in space and the conditions that frame seeing.
