For this series begun in the early 2000s, Barth sought to capture the effect of the after image — the ghost-like image one continues to see after exposure to an original image is finished. Here one’s eyes might play tricks as the gaze moves from one photograph to the next. The subtle changes that appear from image to image reflect time and ocular fatigue. Notably this series is Barth’s first to use digital technology and it advances her investigation further into the realm of vision’s physical phenomenon.

“The moment of picture-taking signals a breach in the continuity of perception – Barth calls it an “interruption” – and its results are inevitably marked, scarred, in the process. (Henri) Cartier-Bresson famously declared the shot a “decisive moment,” a point where attention is intensified, crystallized, but here it is rather a record of rupture, and one that stubbornly resists any sort of narrative rehabilitation.” -- Jan Tumlir, Uta Barth: white blind (bright red) . -- Label copy for Uta Barth, 2/12/2011 to 5/8/2011.
