As part of her artistic process, Barth collects pictures from newspapers and magazines as source material. But instead of looking for a central figure, action, or product, she prefers images with an intriguing background. Cropping the clipping to just the section that interests her, she highlights formal characteristics or the presence of an odd relationship between the events in the foreground and the non-descript space behind it. For the portfolio of lithographs …in passing, Barth reproduced a group of these truncated images as a meditation on how we are conditioned to look at foregrounded elements rather than tune into the details found in the margins.
“The question for me always is how can I make you aware of your own activity of looking, instead of losing your attention to thoughts about what it is that you are looking at?” -- Uta Barth
