This work was also purchased by Henry in 1912, as part of his effort to collect early masters of 19th-century European landscape painting. It is an example of Barbizon painting: the rural scene, somber palette, intimate format (for display in a cabinet), and thick, unblended color. To the right is Honore Daumier's house, France's greatest satiric artist of the 18th century, known for his incisive political and social caricatures. -- Label copy for Unpacking the Collection: Collecting at the Beginning of the Century: The Horace C. Henry Collection, April 10 - May 15, 1997 and October 10, 1997 - June 14, 1998.
