Nan Goldin’s photographs of her friends, lovers, and acquaintances on the fringes of society present an intimate and personal view of world issues. Looking back on her photographs of
the 1980s and ’90s, her work can be seen as chronicling the AIDS crisis as it manifested itself in the microcosm of her social circle. Gilles and Gotscho at Home, Paris, is an image of her French
art dealer, Gilles Dusein, and his lover Gotscho. Through her snapshot aesthetic, Goldin has created a spontaneous memorial of her friend Gilles while he is still seemingly healthy and fit,

Nan Goldin created a photographic chronicle of the French art dealer Gilles Dusein and his lover, the artist Gotscho, during the year when Dusein was diagnosed with, and died of, AIDS. Dusein owned the Paris gallery where Goldin first exhibited her photographs; he was an early advocate of her work and a close friend.
