In the 1970s, Nan Goldin began making photographs directly from her personal life, particularly focusing her lens on individuals with whom she developed close relationships while living within the queer community. The photograph of Ivy walking through the Boston Public Garden, on your immediate right, is one of many Goldin made of her drag queen friends, with whom she became roommates soon after meeting in the early years of that decade. Through these images, Goldin sought to show the possibilities of a third gender in an otherwise binary system of female/male, and to express her admiration for their bravery to publically express their true, inner selves.
