Angling Streams. While on holiday Haden would frequently combine his two favorite hobbies of etching and angling. On the Test, A Lancashire River, and Grayling Fishing portray Sir Seymour's favorite trout streams and salmon pools. Believing spontaneity to be the essence of strength and harmony, Haden completed On the Test in a single evening. For Grayling Fishing, to achieve this spontaneity in mezzotint (a much more complicated process), Haden prepared a rough sheet of paper rubbed with charcoal on which he could work directly from nature, scraping away the lights as in the mezzotint process. He later produced Grayling Fish in his studio from his plein air sketch. -- Label copy from The Landscapes of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, Reed Gallery, April 6, 1991 to September 6, 1991.
