Over his now five decade career, Gerhard Richter has experimented with a wide range of styles. While this variety undermines any sense of visual cohesion to his oeuvre, in fact he consistently addresses many of the same themes throughout his work, particularly the intersection between painting and photography. In this work, Richter applied leftover paint scraped from his canvases onto the photograph in a free, spontaneous gesture, using the paint to emphasize the surface and materiality of the photograph. Richter has created over a thousand small works in this style, allowing chance to take a key role in producing the relationship between the photograph and the paint. In this particular work, his process produced a chance comparison between the natural forms created by the paint and the rigid, geometric shapes of the buildings in the photograph.
