In the early 1970s, Price moved from Los Angeles to Taos, New Mexico where the landscape and expansive sky had a profound influence on his work. Here, Price undercuts the unadulterated open view in the upper part of the composition by including the cloud emanating from the smoke stack in the lower right vignette. Exposing a somber underbelly of a seemingly innocent scene is signature Price. The billowing smoke form prefigures the looming clouds in the Heat Wave prints and later images of foreboding landscapes. -- Label copy for Ken Price: Inside/Outside, July 5 through September 7, 2014.
