Artist/Maker

Search for the artist, designer, print publisher, manufacturer, or vendor that created or sold an object. Search for artist names by entering the last name first.

Examples: Sperry, Robert; Dior, Christian; Crown Point Press; Frederick & Nelson

Origin(s)

Fine Art objects: Search for the country of birth of the artist/maker. This field includes birth and death dates. When applicable, the second country listed refers to the country the artist resided.

Example: England / U.S. (1923 – 1976)

Costume and Textile objects: Search by the geographic location where the object was created or manufactured. Records are displayed in order by country: state, district, city.

Example: India: Gujarat, Kutch (Kachchh), Bhuj

Some alternative geographic place names are included in parentheses. Either name can be searched.

Example: Persia (Iran)

For both Fine Art and Costume and Textile objects make sure to use proper nouns, not adjectives.

Examples: France (not French) and Greece (not Greek)

Culture

Search by culture, society, or ethnic group. Results will not indicate nationality; to search by nationality use the Origin field.

Examples: Kurdish people, Coptic, Han, Sema Naga tribe

Title/Object

Fine Art objects: Search by title of the work.

Example: Powerhouse Mechanic

Costume and Textile objects: Search by object name.

Examples: Apron, Dress, Shoe, Yardage

Use this field to also search by: regional name (choli, odhani, rubina, tzute), gender of user (boy’s, child’s, girl’s, man’s, woman’s), and occasion (court, evening, mourning, wedding)

Date Made

Search for objects made in a certain year, YYYY. To broaden the search beyond a single year, use the Earliest Year/Latest Year fields below.

Medium

Search by techniques used to create an object.

Fine Art objects: Best results are achieved by using the singular of the term you are searching for (e.g. “etching” rather than “etchings”) and by entering a single word (e.g., “chromogenic” rather than “chromogenic print”).

Examples: Acrylic; Daguerreotype; Gouache; Woodblock; Woodcut

Costume and Textile objects: Narrow your search by including the subtype; for example search for Lace, bobbin, not Lace. Examples: Lace, bobbin; Lace, machine; Lace, needle.or Resist dyed, batik; Resist dyed, double ikat.

Materials

This field is ONLY used for Costume and Textile objects. Search for dyes, fibers, fabrics, and lace or embroidery styles.

Examples: Alpaca, Beads, Brocade, Chantilly lace, Coins, Metallic thread, Schiffli embroidery, Shells

Note: Machine made laces include “(imitation)” after the style.

Including FA or TC in this field will limit results to objects in the collection you have chosen.

Search for the unique identifying number assigned to the object by the Henry Art Gallery.

Earliest Year

This field controls a search by eliminating all objects made before the year entered in the field (YYYY).
