Like Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson, the German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans quickly rose to fame in the 1990s for his ability to capture raw, powerful moments in his images of friends and associates. His portraits appear improvisatory and spontaneous, when in fact they are often carefully crafted by working intimately with the sitter to open up a glimpse of a vulnerable personality. -- Label copy for Somebody, April 1 to August 3, 2008.
