Felix Buhot was first celebrated as a watercolorist and began etching in the 1870s. Like Haden in England, Buhot expended much energy in endeavoring to spread the knowledge of his art throughout France. It was his affection for England, though, which inspired some of his masterpieces. With its characteristic marginalia of 'remarques,' Une Jetee en Angleterre is a good example of Buhot's fascination with printing. The marginalia of the first state (shown here) are replaced by seagulls in the third state, and in the fourth state what had previously been a drypoint became an etching. -- Label copy for University Collection '83, June 17 - July 17, 1983.
