Whistler's Amsterdam etchings were not formally published. He did employ his "secret drawing" technique in this later series -- working from the center out to the edge -- causing the images to appear insubstantial and delicate. This resulted in a sensitive depiction of line, light and water, with an abstracted linearity around the edges. -- Label copy for James McNeill Whistler: A Dreamer Apart, Reed Gallery, March 27 - June 15, 1990.
