During the Whistler-Haden collaborations they made an excursion to Greenwich Park, taking grounded plates with them. The two men climbed part way up the hill and found some agreeable subjects in the form of some elderly Greenwich pensioners taking the sun. On the same day Whistler etched this plate, taking a more traditional and impersonal view of trees in a park. His technique of strong crosshatching of foreground and central trees lead to the more distant and sketchy picnickers. -- Label copy for James McNeill Whistler: A Dreamer Apart, Reed Gallery, March 27 - June 15, 1990.
