Andy Warhol made these Polaroids of Jane Lang Davis, a Seattle collector who has built a nationally renowned collection of postwar American art. Warhol used one of the images from this series as the basis for a large-scale screen print double portrait made as a birthday gift for Lang; the double portrait was unveiled at the opening of Warhol’s 1976 exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum. In these photos of Lang, the subject’s smile and playful poses are evidence of Warhol’s ability to capture a sitter’s personality while managing to elicit a touch of glamour, as with Lang’s coquettish toss of the head. -- Label copy for Inside-Out: Portrait Photographs from the Permanent Collection, July 2 to November 29, 2009.
