Abstracted grasses evoking ideas of electric arcs and random motion imply an electrified landscape in Harry Callahan’s Grasses, Wisconsin. The rise in popularity of television, automobile, and picture windows during the 1950s offered artists and the public a new variety of perspectives from which to consider the world. Focusing on the abstractions offered by nature, Callahan created images that were in line with the abstract expressionist movement going on at the time.
