Throughout his career James Hajicek has been interested in alternative printing processes such as the cyanotype process used in this photograph. Cyanotype uses photosensitive chemicals that, when exposed to sunlight, yield a blue dye. In this set of photographs Hajicek shows three different views of the same scene, each quite distinct from the others. By so doing he reveals the way that a photographer can carefully choose the perspective from which to shoot a scene, emphasizing different specific aspects of the scene. He thus points out the extent to which photographers have control over the meaning of apparently objective, documentary images. -- Label copy for Material and Document: Experiments in Photography during the 1970s, November 4, 2011, to February 4, 2012.
