The Alhambra was built in the fourteenth century as the seat of the Moorish monarchy in Granada. In 1492, Muslim leaders surrendered the city to Spanish Christian rule. Thirty-five years later, Holy Roman Emperor Carlos V began construction of a renaissance palace in the midst of the Alhambra complex. Although the palace of Carlos V was never completed, it demonstrates the legacy of both Islamic and Christian rule in Granada.
