This image is part of a series entitled Night Walk, a collection of black-and-white works taken in Wessel’s nighttime neighborhood. Using a glaring flash, he illuminates objects to create strong positive and negative space as well as intriguing shadows to complicate the composition.

Henry Wessel was born in New Jersey and studied at the Visual Studies Workshop at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Now based in San Francisco, he has taught photography at the San Francisco Art Institute for over thirty years but maintained an association as well with the street photographers of New York. -- Label copy for 150 Works of Art, October 1, 2005 to February 26, 2006.
