Today marking the center of the Spanish road network, the Puerta del Sol, or “Sun Gate” once served as an entrance to the Spanish capital. Named for the rising of the sun in the east, the “Sun Gate,” was the eastern entrance into the city. Although the actual gate was demolished after the fifteenth century, the Puerta del Sol remains as one of the busiest locales in Madrid.
