Sol LeWitt is well known for his conceptual art practice of producing abstract wall drawings by writing sets of instructions and then allowing others to execute them. LeWitt also worked with photographs throughout his career, following a similar systematic approach that deemphasized the individual artist’s aesthetic input. For this work, photographs arranged in a grid depict the same brick wall, shot with differing exposures and under varying light conditions. The composition underscores LeWitt’s interest in the ways that seriality and repetition reflect different versions of the same subject. -- Label copy for Material and Document: Experiments in Photography during the 1970s, November 4, 2011, to February 4, 2012.
