Forsaking narrative, illusion, and metaphor, Tuttle positions his art works as concrete objects in material reality by calling attention to the basic relationships of surface, line, and frame. Here, the artist used ink washes to create a unique drawing that becomes the basis for the photogravure print. The squiggles mark the expressive hand of the artist layering medium upon support. Paradoxically, Tuttle presents the evidence of his own “style” through a reproductive process that renders the work a unified surface, exactly as the title describes. -- Label copy for 150 Works of Art, October 1, 2005 to February 26, 2006.
