Many artists responded to the hardships of the Depression by depicting optimistic scenes of people at work and conversely, the despair of the unemployed. Typical are public scenes like Line Men, C.C.C. Wood Cutters, and Union Square. In this print, Industry, Skinner atypically depicts people in an intimate domestic scene, poignantly reflecting both idleness and productivity. -- Label copy for Tradition and Innovation: American prints of the 1920s and 1930s from the Henry Art Gallery Collection, Reed Gallery, March 17 to October 21, 1999.
