Landscape painter Homer Dodge Martin created scores of early drawings as studies for his paintings. Most of them, like the drawing for On Lake Ontario, are dark outlines on buff paper touched with highlights of white. The white addition in this particular study draws attention to the large stones in the center of the work. In transforming the sketch into a final painting, Martin has replaced the stones with a glowing pool of light. The Henry Art Gallery is fortunate to have this initial sketch as well as the completed painting among its holdings. Both works are included in this exhibition for your comparison. -- Label copy for 150 Works of Art, October 1, 2005 to February 26, 2006.
